HERO
I have never seen you
sit in the corner of the shower
head heavy with what you don’t say
But if you did
I would pick you up
and let you give out
if you asked me to.
I have never seen you
roll into me when you are awake
with tears in your eyes
hoping I will wait
but if you did I would
sit up all night
if you asked me to.
Tell me all the things I already know.
What your mother said, what your father did,
and how you were afraid you’d never grow
into anything special so you sat on the bottom of trees
looking up as everyone else had a wild climb
and you reasoned I was on top of that tree
the whole time.
There were two months there that we were
completely ourselves and I’ve been searching for that woman
you found
ever since.
